Saturday I witnessed a dream come true. It was the kick-off celebration for the Duke Dream Campaign at the new Lakeview Pavilion just down the street from Duke Hospital.

The Duke Dream (Development Research Excellence in Anesthesia Management) Campaign will provide funds to the department's research initiatives.

A lot of preparation went into the planning of this event.

Many sponsors and area businesses donated their goods and services for the evening.

The night began with a cocktail hour and wine tasting. During this time, guests had an opportunity to tour the new Lakeview Lofts. Then, the guests were seated for dinner.

Just before dessert, Victor Dzau, president and CEO of Duke University Health System, recognized the sponsors and thanked everyone for their support.

Next, Mark Newman, chairman of Duke Anesthesiology, made a special presentation to Anthony & Company, the founding sponsor, and Elizabeth Perez, director of Strategic Planning and Development for the Department of Anesthesiology.

But, the highlight of the evening was the performance by the Branford Marsalis Quartet.

It was a treat to see him up close, and I felt fortunate to be among those who were a part of the evening.

Burkhard Mackensen came out with his wife Jutta von Stieglitz, both doctors, though Von Stieglitz is currently on leave.

The couple enjoyed the evening, which raised more than $200,000.
