Duke University greatly appreciates cash donations in any form, including foreign currency, US dollars drawn on foreign banks, or foreign "dollars". Duke gives its donors gift credit in US dollars for the value of the donation, based on current exchange rates, as of the day of receipt.
It is important to know that Duke incurs what can amount to be substantial bank fees to process these types of gifts. Foreign currency or checks drawn on foreign banks are assessed a fee of up to $75.00 per item for handling. US currency items drawn on foreign banks will be assessed fees ranging from $2.00 to $50.00.
Unfortunately there are times when the fees associated with a gift of this type outweigh the gift itself. In these rare cases, Duke must decline to accept the gift and respectfully ask that the donation be made via US dollars or written on a check drawn from a US bank. Due to these significant fees, the University has established a policy stating that no foreign check for less than $100, even on a US dollar account, will be presented for payment.
Please consult your financial institution for more information on the current US exchange rates.
