We dream to protect the future by gaining knowledge and translating our research into the best possible clinical care. Even though many of our research findings have made an impact worldwide, memory dysfunction after surgery still occurs at an alarmingly high rate. Thus, brain protection research needs to be pursued aggressively.
For over 15 years, the Duke DREAM Team has pioneered efforts to carry out brain protection research. A huge amount of resources has been spent to study the effects of surgery and anesthesia on brain function and overall patient outcomes. Our goal is to identify the causative factors that can impact overall patient outcome and ultimately prevent complications, and to protect the body from injury. From the patient’s genetic make-up to the caregiver’s interventions, we have investigated multiple factors that may affect brain function.
