We are celebrating more than 75 years of Duke Medicine, which began with an extraordinary act of philanthropy by James Buchanan Duke in 1930. Today, Duke Medicine is carrying out Mr. Duke’s dream through excellence in research, medical education, patient care, and service to the local and international community.

The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Duke is committed to advancing the quality and span of human life by making new discoveries in anesthesia care. The acronym DREAM stands for Developing Research Excellence in Anesthesia Management, a program committed to brain and organ protection research. In the following pages, you will learn about the Duke DREAM Team’s commendable efforts to improve outcomes for heart surgery patients. Recent advances in molecular biology and genomics have given new momentum to this important work.

The DREAM Team’s work is critical to the success of state-of-the-art surgical care innovations. Thank you for your interest and support of the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Duke.
